New Data Shows Students Are Increasingly Abusing AI for School Assignments

The concrete answer is yes: new data shows student use of AI for school assignments has surged so fast that it is no longer a marginal issue.

In higher education, AI use is now close to universal in some major surveys, and a significant share of students openly admit using it in ways that go beyond brainstorming or editing and move into direct assignment completion, essay writing, and text insertion.

At the same time, the most serious research also shows that the story is bigger than simple cheating. What is rising even faster than outright misconduct is dependence on AI for core academic tasks, which makes the line between legitimate support and academic dishonesty much harder for schools to police.

The Strongest Data Says AI Use in Student Work is Exploding

One of the clearest signals comes from the Higher Education Policy Institute and Kortext. Their 2026 student survey found that 95 percent of students reported using AI in at least one way, and 94 percent said they used generative AI to help with assessed work.

That is an extraordinary number because it means AI assistance is now embedded inside normal academic production, not sitting outside it as a niche behavior.

The same report also found that 12 percent of students said they directly included AI-generated text in assessed work, up from 8 percent in 2025 and 3 percent in 2024. That trend matters because it points to rising direct substitution of student writing with machine-generated output.

The 2025 HEPI findings were already alarming. That earlier survey found overall AI use among students at 92 percent and use for assessed work at 88 percent.

In other words, the 2026 results did not reveal a new behavior. They showed that the earlier wave was not temporary and that the normalization process kept accelerating.

A useful way to read those numbers is this: even when only a minority openly admits pasting AI-generated text into submissions, the much bigger reality is that almost everyone is now using AI somewhere in the assignment workflow. That changes the educational system even before a misconduct case is formally proven.

What Counts as Abuse And What Counts as Assistance

This is where many weak articles get the issue wrong. Not every use of AI is abuse. A student who uses AI to explain a difficult concept, simplify a reading, or generate practice questions is not automatically cheating.

But a student who uses it to write a paper, produce graded answers, paraphrase copied content to avoid detection, or submit machine-generated prose as original work has crossed into academic dishonesty in most schools.

The problem is that the gray zone is getting larger. A student may ask AI for an outline, then a thesis, then topic sentences, then paragraph rewrites, then a final polish.

At the end, the submitted work may technically contain student edits, but the intellectual labor behind it has been heavily offloaded. That is why the new concern is not only cheating in the classic sense. It is cognitive outsourcing on a scale schools were not built to handle.

Students Themselves Admit Some Uses Are Clearly Improper

One of the most important recent signals came from Inside Higher Ed coverage of a 2025 student survey. It found that 25 percent of college students said they used generative AI to complete assignments for them, while 19 percent said they used it to write full essays.

Those are not soft numbers about brainstorming or study help. Those are direct admissions that a meaningful share of students are allowing AI to do graded academic work in their place.

That does not mean every school assignment is now fake. It does mean the old assumption that a submitted paper mostly reflects a student’s own thinking is far less stable than it was even two years ago. For instructors, that shifts the baseline of suspicion. For institutions, it forces a redesign of assessment itself.

Teenagers are Bringing Pro-AI Norms into The Classroom Even Before College

The college data is not emerging in isolation. Common Sense Media found that 67 percent of kids and teens use AI at least sometimes, and 55 percent say they use it to help with homework or school assignments. Just as important, the report found that 52 percent of kids and teens think using AI in school assignments is innovative and should be encouraged.

That finding matters because it reveals a cultural shift, not just a technical one. Many students no longer see AI as a borderline shortcut. They increasingly see it as a normal part of how schoolwork gets done.

When that attitude becomes widespread, enforcement becomes harder. A tool does not feel illicit to students when half their peer group treats it as standard workflow support. In practical terms, that means schools are facing a legitimacy problem, not only a discipline problem.

The institutional side of the story is also getting harder to ignore. A Guardian investigation reported that nearly 7,000 UK university students were caught cheating with AI in 2023 to 2024.

The article said AI-related cases rose to 5.1 per 1,000 students from 1.6 per 1,000 the prior year, with projections pointing even higher. Traditional plagiarism cases, meanwhile, have been falling. That does not mean dishonesty is disappearing. It means the form of dishonesty is changing.

That shift is one of the clearest signs that educators are moving from a plagiarism era into a generative-AI era. Copy-and-paste from websites is easier to spot than polished, custom machine-generated prose shaped around a prompt. The misconduct has become more fluid, more individualized, and more deniable.

The Tools Themselves Tell the Story

Part of what makes this trend so serious is that the student-facing AI market is now built around assignment production. Many services do not present themselves as general productivity tools.

They market directly to stressed students who want papers, drafts, rewrites, essay expansion, citation help, and even output designed to look more human.

For example, Textero frames itself as a paper-writing support platform for students, offering draft generation, outlining, essay editing, citation help, and related academic-writing tools, while also stating that students should use the output ethically and make sure final submissions reflect their own ideas.

That kind of messaging captures the entire problem in one place: the market is openly built around assignment completion, but the responsibility for ethical use is pushed back onto the student.

Why This is Happening So Fast

There are several reasons the growth is so steep. The first is speed. AI can produce something instantly, which appeals to students under deadline pressure. The second is confidence.

Many students now believe the tool can get them close enough to a passing answer with minimal effort. The third is ambiguity. Some schools still have inconsistent rules about what counts as acceptable AI use, which lets students rationalize behavior that would have been clearly forbidden in earlier eras.

There is also a practical reason. AI helps weaker writers hide their weakness. It can smooth grammar, create structure, imitate academic tone, and produce the appearance of competence.

That can be attractive not only to lazy students but also to overwhelmed students, multilingual students, anxious students, and students who feel they are already behind. The ethical problem remains, but the motivation is broader than simple dishonesty.

The Real Change is Not Only Cheating But Dependency

The best research suggests something more unsettling than a simple rise in cheating. The larger trend may be student dependency on AI for thinking tasks that education is supposed to develop. HEPI’s 2026 report notes heavy use for explaining concepts, summarizing material, and structuring ideas.

Those functions sound harmless, but they sit close to the center of learning itself. If a student repeatedly outsources interpretation, synthesis, and structure, the visible assignment may still get submitted, but the invisible intellectual growth may be thinner than before.

This is where the issue becomes educational rather than merely disciplinary. Schools can punish a copied essay after the fact. It is much harder to measure what a student did not learn because AI handled the hard part each week.

The Case is Serious, But The Evidence Has to Be Read Carefully

A responsible article also has to say this: not every study shows a dramatic spike in total self-reported cheating rates. Some research suggests that while AI use has surged, overall cheating rates have remained more stable than many headlines imply.

UNESCO’s 2025 discussion of the post-plagiarism turn cites evidence that traditional plagiarism is declining while AI-related misconduct is rising, which supports the idea that forms of dishonesty are shifting rather than simply exploding in one clean line.

That is an important distinction. The strongest argument is not that AI created dishonesty from nothing. The stronger argument is that AI has made academic outsourcing easier, quicker, more socially acceptable, and harder to detect. That alone is enough to force a major rethink of assessment.

Detection is Not a Complete Solution

Many institutions hoped AI detectors would solve the problem. They will not. UNESCO’s 2025 analysis notes that AI detectors often produce false positives and can be biased across languages and contexts.

Turnitin’s own guidance treats AI writing indicators as signals for further review, not final proof. In practice, that means schools cannot rely on software alone to settle integrity cases fairly.

This has serious consequences. If detectors are imperfect, instructors may wrongly accuse honest students. If detectors miss strong AI output, other students may get away with substitution.

That leaves educators squeezed between weak enforcement and unreliable evidence. The result is a system where trust erodes on both sides.

The clearest conclusion is that students are increasingly using AI in ways that undermine authentic academic work, and the evidence is now too broad to dismiss. The strongest data does not support a lazy claim that every student is cheating.

It supports a more serious claim: AI has made it normal for students to outsource parts of thinking, drafting, and composing, and a substantial minority are using it in ways that fit any reasonable definition of abuse.

That is why this is not just a technology story. It is a story about standards, effort, authorship, and what schools are actually measuring when they assign work. The old question was whether a student copied someone else’s words.

The new question is whether the submitted work still represents the student’s own mind in any meaningful way. Right now, the data suggests that the answer is becoming harder to guarantee with every semester.
