“Tech neck” describes neck and upper-back discomfort tied to prolonged screen use, especially when the head repeatedly leans forward.
Computer work can certainly strain muscles and joints. Yet a properly arranged workstation can keep a monitor near eye level, support the arms, and help maintain a neutral head position. Smartphones rarely offer those advantages.
Several hours of downward phone viewing may therefore create more cumulative strain than a full workday at an ergonomically arranged computer.
Why Looking Down at a Phone Puts So Much Stress on the Neck
An adult head weighs roughly 10 to 12 pounds when positioned upright. Muscles, joints, and spinal structures are designed to support that weight efficiently when the ears sit roughly above the shoulders.
Tilting forward changes the mechanical load.

A computer workstation can often be arranged so the head stays relatively neutral. Monitor height, chair support, viewing distance, and keyboard placement can all be adjusted. Portable devices are commonly held low, used without arm support, and checked throughout nearly every part of the day. Repeated downward viewing can therefore expose neck muscles and cervical structures to high loads far outside normal working hours. Several hours of habitual phone use may place greater cumulative stress on the neck than a full day spent at a properly arranged computer. Raising the device, moving frequently, taking breaks, and strengthening supporting muscles can reduce that burden without giving up the technology people rely on every day.
