Speaking more than one language may do more than make travel easier or help with work. New research suggests it could also be linked to a brain that ages more slowly.
Researchers studying multilingual adults found a clear pattern: the more languages a person spoke, the younger their brain appeared compared with their actual age.
The largest difference was seen in people who spoke four languages. Their estimated brain age was about 13 years younger than that of people who spoke only one language.
The findings were presented at the Federation of European Neuroscience Societies Forum 2026 and were recently highlighted by ScienceDaily.
Four Languages Were Linked to the Biggest Difference in Brain Age

The research was led by Dr. Lucia Amoruso of the Basque Center on Cognition, Brain and Language in San Sebastián, Spain.
Her team studied people from the Basque region who spoke different combinations of Spanish, Basque, French and English.
The results showed a gradual relationship between language experience and estimated brain age:

The numbers do not mean that speaking four languages literally reverses 13 years of biological aging. Researchers were comparing patterns of brain activity with patterns normally seen at different ages.
In other words, the brains of some multilingual participants functionally resembled those typically seen in younger people.
Researchers Built a Brain Aging Clock
To make that comparison, the team first needed a way to estimate the age of a brain independently from the person’s date of birth.
They studied 728 people using magnetoencephalography, or MEG. The technique measures the extremely small magnetic fields produced when brain cells are active.
Researchers then used artificial intelligence to identify age-related patterns in how different parts of the brain communicate.
That produced what the team called a brain aging clock.
The model was then applied to a separate group of 144 people. Researchers compared each participant’s estimated brain age with their actual chronological age and looked at how the difference related to language experience.
The approach focuses on brain connectivity rather than simply measuring the physical size of different brain regions.
Fluency Appears to Matter Too
The number of languages was not the only factor connected with younger brain estimates.
People who learned a second language earlier in life tended to show a larger difference. Higher proficiency was also associated with younger-looking brain activity.
That suggests regularly using another language may matter more than simply knowing a few words from a language learned years ago.
Amoruso described multilingualism as a gradient rather than a simple division between bilingual and monolingual people. The depth of experience, how early another language was learned and how well a person speaks it all appeared relevant.
Why Would Speaking Several Languages Affect the Brain?
A multilingual brain regularly has to choose between competing language systems.
A person who knows several languages has words, grammar rules and sounds from multiple systems available at the same time. The brain has to select the language being used and suppress information from the others.
That repeated process engages networks involved in attention, control and communication between brain regions.
Researchers have been studying whether years of this mental activity contribute to what is known as cognitive reserve. Cognitive reserve describes the brain’s ability to continue functioning despite age-related changes or disease.
A separate 2025 study published in Nature Aging examined 86,149 people across 27 European countries and found that multilingualism was associated with a lower likelihood of accelerated biobehavioral aging.
That study found multilingualism was associated with lower risk in both cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses, providing a much larger population-level result that points in the same general direction.
The New Study Does Not Prove Languages Cause a Younger Brain
The result is interesting, but there is an important limit.
The researchers found an association. They did not randomly assign people to learn several languages and then follow their brains for decades.
Multilingual people may differ from monolingual people in other ways that also affect brain aging.
They may have different education levels, social networks, occupations, lifestyles or patterns of mental activity. The researchers adjusted their analysis for age, sex and education, but other influences remain possible.
Another recent study illustrates why the broader evidence needs to be read carefully. Research published in Memory & Cognition in June found only limited evidence that multilingualism protected healthy adults from age-related decline across several cognitive measures.
That does not cancel the new brain-imaging findings. It shows that multilingualism and aging are still active areas of research and that different studies are measuring different things.
The Findings Could Matter for Dementia Research
The next question is whether a younger-looking brain translates into meaningful protection against cognitive decline or neurodegenerative disease.
Amoruso’s team plans to study multilingualism in people with conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease.
That question matters because brain resilience can sometimes allow people to maintain memory and everyday function despite underlying neurological damage.
Research published in 2026 in Neurobiology of Aging has already found evidence consistent with greater cognitive reserve among multilingual adults with or at risk for Alzheimer’s disease.

Learning Another Language Later in Life Still Has Value
The strongest association in the new research appeared among people who started earlier and became more fluent, but the findings do not establish a cutoff age after which language learning becomes pointless.
Learning a language requires memory, attention, listening, problem solving and repeated retrieval of information. It also creates opportunities for social interaction, another factor consistently associated with healthier aging.
Professor Christina Dalla, who chairs the FENS Forum communication committee and was not involved in the study, noted that effortful learning is one of several ways people can keep the brain actively engaged throughout life.
Language learning should therefore be viewed as one possible part of healthy aging rather than a treatment or guarantee against dementia.
Physical activity, cardiovascular health, sleep, smoking, hearing, social connection and other factors all influence long-term brain health.

What the 13-Year Number Really Means
The most eye-catching result from the study is naturally the 13-year difference among people who spoke four languages.
It should not be interpreted as a promise that learning three extra languages will take 13 years off anyone’s brain age.
The figure came from an estimated brain-age model applied to a relatively small test group. It describes an average difference observed between groups in this particular sample.
The more useful finding is the broader pattern. People with greater multilingual experience tended to have brain activity that looked younger, and the relationship became stronger with earlier learning and greater proficiency.
That fits with previous evidence suggesting that using several languages throughout life places repeated demands on brain networks involved in communication and cognitive control.
The next stage of research will show whether those differences remain over time and, more importantly, whether they translate into lower rates of cognitive impairment and dementia.
