Knight-Hennessy Scholars funds graduate study across Stanford University, including eligible masters, doctoral, medical, law and business programs.

The package also includes a stipend for housing, food, books, supplies, local transportation and reasonable personal costs. An annual travel stipend supports one economy flight to and from Stanford, and new scholars receive relocation assistance.

The application for the 2027 cohort closes on October 6, 2026, at 1 p.m. Pacific Time. Students must submit a separate Stanford graduate program application and gain admission to that program.

Applicants must submit an Early Decision I or Early Action admission application by November 1, 2026. No separate initial scholarship form is required. Selected semifinalists are normally invited to an online interview.

The Robertson Scholars Leadership Program supports undergraduate study at Duke University or the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Funding covers eight semesters of tuition, room, board and most mandatory fees. Scholars can also receive support for as many as three summer experiences, conferences, independent learning and up to two semesters abroad.

Applications open on August 15, 2026. The early application window closes on October 15, followed by the final deadline on November 15. Applicants must also apply separately to Duke, UNC-Chapel Hill or both.

Students of every citizenship and nationality can apply through the high school selection process.

• Best for: Students with a record of purposeful leadership, collaboration and service rather than a list of titles without measurable work.
• Main application lesson: Leadership examples should explain what changed because of the applicant. Serving as club president means little without evidence of decisions, results and responsibility.

6. Morehead-Cain Scholarship at UNC-Chapel Hill

The Morehead-Cain Scholarship funds four years at UNC-Chapel Hill and four summer experiences. Support includes tuition, books, housing and meals or a semester stipend, along with discovery funding and opportunities for study abroad.

International eligibility is more complicated than at many other universities. Students outside the United States generally need to attend an approved nominating school or participate through an affiliate program. Exceptional students without a standard nomination route may sometimes be invited after applying to UNC through the Admissions Referral Program.

The scholarship application for the Class of 2031 opens on August 15, 2026. International candidates taking part in the scholarship process must submit the UNC application by October 15, 2026 for Early Action or January 1, 2027 under the special scholarship Regular Decision timetable.

Students cannot submit a direct application. A participating secondary school or regional organization must first nominate the candidate. Counselor and nominee material for every region is due on December 1, 2026.

The latest selection cycle involved 7,697 invited secondary schools and 3,289 nominees. Those numbers show why a nomination should not be confused with winning the scholarship.

8. American University Emerging Global Leader Scholarship

The AU Emerging Global Leader Scholarship offers two full awards covering billable tuition, room and board for international undergraduates. American University also offers up to eight partial awards worth as much as $40,000 per year to candidates from the same process.

The full scholarship does not cover health insurance, books, airline tickets, taxes or personal expenses. American University estimates that recipients need approximately $4,000 a year for those remaining costs.

Applicants must submit the Common Application and the separate scholarship material through the university portal by December 1, 2026.

9. Berea College International Student Funding

Berea College reports that it provides 100 percent funding to every enrolled international student. The package offsets tuition, housing, food and fees.

Every international student also receives a paid campus position through the college work program. First-year earnings are approximately $2,500 and can help with personal expenses.

Accepted students are normally expected to pay a $2,200 enrollment deposit, although additional support may be available when a student cannot pay all or part of it. Berea recommends saving about $1,000 per year for personal spending.

The 2026-27 application opens on August 1, 2026. Berea had not published the closing date when this guide was prepared, so applicants should monitor the official deadline page.

• Best for: Academically strong students with very limited family resources who are willing to participate in required campus work.
• Main application lesson: The financial model is unusually generous, but the international class is small. Berea should be one part of a larger application plan, not the only application.

10. Emory University Scholar Programs

Emory University Scholar Programs offer awards ranging from partial merit scholarships to full financial support. International students can be considered for the merit programs.

Applicants must submit an Emory admission application by November 15, 2026 and select scholarship consideration on the Common Application. Awards can be renewed for eight regular semesters when the recipient maintains the required academic and personal standards.

The phrase partial to full is important. Admission does not guarantee a large scholarship, and many awards will not cover the complete cost. Students should wait for the exact financial package before deciding that Emory is affordable.

12. Clark University Presidential Scholarship

The Clark University Presidential Scholarship covers full tuition, on-campus housing and meals for four years.

All admitted first-year students are automatically considered. No separate Presidential Scholarship application is required. Clark awards the scholarship to approximately five students each year and invites finalists to an interview.

Regular Decision applications are due on January 15, 2027. Earlier admission options have separate deadlines.

The AAUW International Fellowship supports eligible women who are not US citizens or permanent residents and who plan to pursue full-time graduate study in the United States.

The 2027-28 awards provide $20,000 for a first masters degree and $25,000 for a first doctoral degree. The current competition is focused on eligible STEM disciplines and requires a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale for the highest completed degree.

Applications open on August 17, 2026, at 9 a.m. Eastern Time and close on September 17, 2026, at 5 p.m. Eastern Time.

Applicants must show confirmed or pending financial support and explain the remaining funding gap. The fellowship is a one-time award, not a promise to fund the entire degree.

How to Build a Scholarship List that Does Not Depend on One Miracle Result?

Full scholarships at selective universities attract strong students from around the world. Applying only to five famous full-ride programs creates a high chance of receiving no affordable offer, even for an excellent student.

• Government or external funding. Fulbright, national ministries, employers, foundations and country-specific programs can be combined with some university awards.
• At least one financially safe option. Admission is not useful when the remaining bill cannot be paid or documented for the student visa.
